The daily pulse of the nicotine pouch market

Lundgrens built a bridge from snus to pouches with its 'dark pouch' Aros line

Lundgrens, one of Sweden's oldest snus brands, has launched Aros — tobacco-free nicotine pouches designed to feel like portion snus. The 'dark pouch' format is bigger, darker and less sweet than typical white pouches, built for snus users who are curious about going tobacco-free as pouches overtake snus in Sweden.

PouchDaily Desk·

Lundgrens — one of Sweden's oldest snus brands — has launched Aros, a line of tobacco-free nicotine pouches explicitly built to feel like portion snus. The standout detail is what Lundgrens calls the "dark pouch": a larger, dark-colored pouch designed to deliver a richer taste and a feel under the lip that's closer to traditional snus than the small white pouches that dominate the category.

It's a bridge product. And it arrives at the moment Sweden's nicotine market is crossing over from snus to pouches.

What Lundgrens launched

Aros is a new series of tobacco-free nicotine pouches in a large "dark pouch" format, sold in a new blue can with Lundgrens' expanding FlexLock™ technology. Each can holds 21 large dark pouches.

The launch lineup has four variants, all positioned as less sweet and closer to traditional snus flavor profiles:

  • Skugga — full tobacco flavor, Normal strength (8 mg/pouch)
  • Skugga Stark — the same tobacco flavor, stronger (12.5 mg/pouch)
  • Dagg — tobacco character balanced with meadow-berry (ängsbär) notes, Normal (8 mg/pouch)
  • Frostnattmint and eucalyptus, less sweet and closer to traditional mint snus, Normal (10 mg/pouch)

The dark color isn't decorative. Lundgrens says it's developed to give a richer taste experience and a sensation under the lip that resembles traditional portion snus — the format Sweden invented and used for two centuries. The pitch is aimed squarely at the snus user who is "curious about tobacco-free alternatives" but doesn't want to compromise on feel or flavor.

Lundgrens already sells white nicotine pouches. Aros is a separate, distinct sub-line: bigger pouches, darker appearance, tobacco-forward and berry/mint profiles rather than the sweet fruit-and-ice flavors that define most of the white-pouch market.

Why this is a bridge, not just another launch

Sweden's snus market is in the middle of a generational handoff. Nicotine pouches — "white snus" in Swedish retail terms — recently overtook traditional snus in sales for the first time.

The Snusrapporten 2026 market report (published by Snusjournalen with Snusbolaget, based on purchase data from over 600,000 customers) puts the split at 53% white snus to 45% tobacco snus, with white snus growing +12% year-on-year while traditional snus fell -9%. The biggest white-snus brands are Velo, Zyn, Loop and XQS. The biggest traditional-snus brands are Knox, Lundgrens, LD and XR.

One detail stands out: the report notes Lundgrens is the only major tobacco-snus brand still growing — the rest of the traditional category is shrinking. Aros reads as Lundgrens converting that residual strength in snus into a pouch product that keeps its existing users as they consider switching, rather than losing them to Velo or Zyn.

That's the strategic logic. Most pouch launches chase new users with sweet flavors and bright branding. Aros does the opposite: it targets the incumbent snus user with a format that looks, feels and tastes like the product they already know — just without the tobacco.

The "dark pouch" bet

The dark-pouch concept is the differentiator worth watching. The mainstream nicotine-pouch category is built on small, white, discreet, often sweet pouches — a format optimized for new users and non-snus markets. Aros inverts that: large, dark, tobacco-flavored, less sweet, and explicitly modeled on portion snus.

If Swedish snus users are indeed migrating to pouches, the question for manufacturers is whether those switchers want something familiar (a pouch that feels like snus) or something new (the sweet, white-pouch format). Lundgrens is betting at least some of them want the familiar — and that a legacy snus brand, not a pouch specialist, is best placed to deliver it.

The risk is that the migration is also a flavor migration: Snusrapporten notes mint, fruit and berry-citrus combinations are the fastest-growing profiles, not tobacco flavor. Aros hedges that with Dagg (berry) and Frostnatt (mint-eucalyptus), but its core is still the tobacco-flavored Skugga line.

What's next

Aros is live in Sweden as of June 2026. The broader signal for the category: as pouches overtake snus in its home market, expect more legacy snus brands to launch bridge products rather than cede switchers to pouch-native brands. The format war inside the pouch category — dark versus white, snus-like versus candy-like — is just starting.
