JTI pulled Nordic Spirit off the market. Now it's back, rebuilt from scratch.

Japan Tobacco International has relaunched Nordic Spirit in Sweden — the white-snus brand it introduced around 2018 and then voluntarily withdrew. The rebuilt lineup has 10 products across three segments (MAX, Minty, Fruity), is made at the Nordic Snus factory in Vårgårda, and rolls out nationally through autumn 2026.

FDA greenlights 11 ZYN Ultra pouches — including its first 11mg

On 21 August 2026 the FDA issued Marketing Granted Orders for 11 ZYN Ultra nicotine pouches from Swedish Match USA — ten 9mg flavours and a new 11mg Smooth. The authorizations push the total of FDA-authorized nicotine pouch products to 43, with 23 cleared through the agency’s nicotine pouch pilot program. The American Lung Association attacked the move, citing youth appeal.

UK to wipe out nicotine pouch advertising from June 2027

From 1 June 2027, all advertising and sponsorship of nicotine pouches becomes illegal across the UK under the Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 — covering social media, billboards, shop windows, and paid online ads. Nicotine pouches currently have zero advertising restrictions. A separate consultation on plain packaging and retail display restrictions closes on 2 October 2026.

FDA lets ZYN claim it’s safer than cigarettes — doctors push back

The FDA issued Modified Risk Tobacco Product orders for 20 ZYN nicotine pouch products on 30 June 2026 — the first time any nicotine pouch has been cleared to advertise reduced disease risk versus cigarettes. The authorised claim covers mouth cancer, heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Public health experts say the labelling could normalise nicotine for new users — and point to 460,000 youth pouch users as evidence the category is already reaching kids.

Four EU countries just froze Poland's plan to make all nicotine pouches taste like tobacco

Poland's draft law would restrict nicotine pouches to a tobacco-only flavour — effectively banning the mint, fruit, and berry profiles that most adult pouch users actually buy. Sweden, Romania, Slovakia, and Greece filed formal EU objections that extended Poland's regulatory standstill to 6 November 2026. Sweden's government calls it a de facto market ban that breaks single-market rules and could worsen public health.

Court clips FDA’s tobacco authority — nicotine pouch rules could be next

A federal appeals court ruled the FDA exceeded its authority by requiring 11 graphic cigarette warnings — Congress only authorized nine. The same legal theory — that the agency went beyond what Congress allowed — is being used to challenge the FDA’s nicotine pouch enforcement guidance in a separate lawsuit.

Lundgrens built a bridge from snus to pouches with its 'dark pouch' Aros line

Lundgrens, one of Sweden's oldest snus brands, has launched Aros — tobacco-free nicotine pouches designed to feel like portion snus. The 'dark pouch' format is bigger, darker and less sweet than typical white pouches, built for snus users who are curious about going tobacco-free as pouches overtake snus in Sweden.

89% of Icelanders call nicotine pouches harmful as Reykjavík weighs flavor limits

Iceland's health ministry has published a draft bill proposing plain packaging, a nicotine-content cap, flavor restrictions, and a ban on cross-border pouch sales. A survey of 2,255 Icelanders released as the consultation closed found 89% consider nicotine pouches harmful — and data show Icelandic youth use pouches at the highest rate in the Nordics.

science

Three nicotine pouch myths — and what the evidence actually says

Nicotine pouches are "tobacco-free" — but that doesn't mean safe. They're marketed as quit-smoking aids, but the FDA hasn't approved them for that. And the cancer question? Nobody knows yet. Here's what CDC, Cochrane, and the American Cancer Society actually say.

JTI pushes Nordic Spirit deeper into the Philippines with two new flavors

Japan Tobacco International has expanded its Nordic Spirit nicotine-pouch lineup in the Philippines with Dark Pop and Red Frost — two new flavors at roughly $2.59 a can, sold through convenience stores and food-delivery apps. It's the latest sign that nicotine pouches are growing fast in Southeast Asia.

Dentists publish first case reports of leukoplakia linked to nicotine pouches

A peer-reviewed case series in BMC Oral Health documents two young men who developed receding gums and a white oral patch — leukoplakia — at the exact spot where they habitually parked their nicotine pouches. It is the first published clinical case report of leukoplakia associated with pouch use, though the lesion was never biopsy-confirmed.

VELO put a music festival on its nicotine pouches

British American Tobacco's flagship nicotine-pouch brand VELO has launched a limited-edition Mango Ice pouch in packaging licensed from Tomorrowland, the Belgian electronic-dance-music festival. It's the clearest example yet of pouch brands borrowing the festival-merch playbook to stand out on a crowded shelf.

Canada is seizing millions of nicotine pouches at the US border

Haypp's nicotine pouch sales jumped 45%. Profit went to zero.

Haypp Group, the largest online nicotine pouch retailer, grew Q2 net sales 28% to SEK 1.18bn as nicotine pouch volume rose 45% and the US and UK each more than doubled. But profit for the quarter came in at SEK 0.0mn as the company poured marketing and personnel spend into growth markets — and launched Saudi Arabia, which it calls the world's second-largest nicotine pouch market.
