The daily pulse of the nicotine pouch market

JTI pulled Nordic Spirit off the market. Now it's back, rebuilt from scratch.

Japan Tobacco International has relaunched Nordic Spirit in Sweden — the white-snus brand it introduced around 2018 and then voluntarily withdrew. The rebuilt lineup has 10 products across three segments (MAX, Minty, Fruity), is made at the Nordic Snus factory in Vårgårda, and rolls out nationally through autumn 2026.

Japan Tobacco International has relaunched Nordic Spirit in Sweden — the nicotine-pouch brand it first introduced around 2018, then voluntarily pulled from the market because, in its own words, it was never built out as a proper long-term platform. The rebuilt version launched June 6 at selected online and physical retailers, with a full national rollout planned through autumn 2026.

This isn't a quiet restocking. JTI describes it as a from-scratch rebuild: new design, new flavors, new strength tiers, and a brand identity positioned around the tagline "Light the Moment." It's a bet that a brand most Swedish pouch users had written off can be made relevant again in the fastest-growing category on the snus shelf.

What JTI actually launched

The new Nordic Spirit lineup is 10 products across three segmentsMAX, Minty, and Fruity — with nicotine content from 5.6 mg up to 16.8 mg per portion (24 mg/g at the top end). It's manufactured at the Nordic Snus factory in Vårgårda, the Swedish producer JTI owns.

The flavor map, per JTI's launch announcement:

Segment Product Nicotine (mg/portion)
Minty Sweet Mint 5.6 / 8.4
Minty Frosty Mint (peppermint & menthol) 10.5
Minty Icy Peppermint (peppermint & menthol) 10.5 / 16.8
Fruity Raspberry 10.5 / 16.8
Fruity Blueberry 10.5
Fruity Dark Fizz Slim (cinnamon, vanilla & citrus) 8.4
MAX Jalapeño Lime (jalapeño & lime) 16.8

JTI maps the strengths to four tiers: 5.6 mg Mild, 8.4 mg Normal, 10.5 mg Stark, and 16.8 mg Extra stark. The MAX segment — led by Icy Peppermint MAX and Jalapeño Lime MAX at 16.8 mg — is aimed at experienced users chasing the strongest option, a segment JTI says is growing as Swedish pouch consumers get more familiar with the category.

Why "relaunch" matters more than "launch"

The detail that makes this story different from a standard new-product announcement is the withdrawal. Nordic Spirit was one of the early white-snus brands in Sweden, originally launched around 2018. But JTI concedes it had a limited presence, a narrow assortment, and was never built as a durable brand platform — so the company pulled it rather than let it drift.

In an interview with Swedish trade outlet MinPrilla, JTI Marketing Director Kozeta Ismaili Hayes and Brand Manager Agustina Arzura framed the relaunch as the result of that rethink: rather than making incremental fixes to a weak brand, JTI rebuilt it from the ground up with a clearer identity, a segmented assortment, and a focus on the total experience rather than just a functional product. The decision to withdraw first, then return with something rebuilt, is the part worth noting — most tobacco companies would have just refreshed the packaging and kept shipping.

Why Sweden, and why now

Sweden is the spiritual home of nicotine pouches and still the market where the category is most mature. JTI's own framing is that nicotine portions are the fastest-growing category on the Swedish snus shelf, with consumers increasingly exploring new flavors and strengths — which is exactly the gap a relaunched, segmented Nordic Spirit is built to fill.

The rollout is deliberately staged. The initial June 6 launch went to selected online retailers and some physical stores. A summer tour is taking the brand to Halmstad, Falsterbo, Uppsala, Visby, Malmö, Stockholm, and Göteborg, paired with digital marketing and a customer loyalty club. The broader national rollout into convenience and grocery retail is scheduled for autumn 2026.

The competitive picture

JTI is making this move in a crowded home market. ZYN, owned by Philip Morris International, is the global category leader, and Sweden's shelf is dense with local names — On!, Velo, Lundgrens, and a long tail of challenger brands all competing on flavor, strength, and price. Nordic Spirit doesn't have ZYN's scale, so JTI is competing on portfolio design (the MAX/Minty/Fruity segmentation), strength range up to 16.8 mg/portion, and local manufacturing provenance — the "made in Vårgårda" angle matters in a market that prizes Swedish-made snus heritage.

The relaunch also complements, rather than duplicates, JTI's other Nordic Spirit moves: the company has been expanding the same brand in the Philippines with new flavors, targeting emerging Southeast Asian markets. Sweden is the opposite play — defending home turf in the category's most established market.

What's next

The test for the relaunch won't be the launch event; it'll be whether the brand holds shelf space through autumn and into 2027. JTI has telegraphed a long-term plan built around a loyalty club and ongoing flavor development, which suggests it's treating this as a multi-year rebuild rather than a one-summer push.

The regulatory backdrop is the variable JTI can't control. Sweden is debating tighter rules for white snus — an 18-year age limit and discussions over a possible nicotine cap — and any cap below the 16.8 mg/portion ceiling Nordic Spirit's MAX segment uses would directly affect the strongest products in this new lineup. A brand rebuilt around strength tiers is more exposed to a nicotine cap than one built around mild flavors.
