The daily pulse of the nicotine pouch market

JTI pushes Nordic Spirit deeper into the Philippines with two new flavors

Japan Tobacco International has expanded its Nordic Spirit nicotine-pouch lineup in the Philippines with Dark Pop and Red Frost — two new flavors at roughly $2.59 a can, sold through convenience stores and food-delivery apps. It's the latest sign that nicotine pouches are growing fast in Southeast Asia.

Japan Tobacco International has expanded its Nordic Spirit nicotine-pouch lineup in the Philippines with two new flavors: Dark Pop and Red Frost. Both are tobacco-free, 6mg nicotine pouches, sold in 20-pouch cans at PHP 150 (about US$2.59) — a fraction of what pouches cost in Europe or the US.

The expansion shows a major tobacco company investing in pouch flavor development for an emerging market where the category is still young — and where distribution now runs through everything from convenience stores to food-delivery apps.

What JTI launched

The two new Nordic Spirit variants are:

  • Dark Pop — a fizzy cola profile with citrus and sweet notes
  • Red Frost — cool mint combined with sweet red berry flavors

Both come in regular cans of 20 pouches at 6mg nicotine strength, according to trade publication 2firsts. They're available through Nordic Spirit's Philippine online store at nordicspirit.ph, on e-commerce platforms Shopee and Lazada, through grocery delivery services Pick.a.roo and Foodpanda's Pandamart, and in convenience stores including 7-Eleven, Uncle John's, and Lawson.

At roughly $2.59 per can, the price is striking: ZYN in the US sells for $5–8 per can, and European pouch brands often price between €4–€6. The low price point reflects both local purchasing power and JTI's effort to make the category accessible in a market where disposable income is lower.

Why the Philippines matters

Nordic Spirit arrived on Philippine shelves in 2023, according to Corner Magazine PH. Since then, JTI has been steadily building the brand's presence — the country's Bureau of Internal Revenue recently logged 192 registered nicotine brands, signaling significant commercial activity across pouches, heated tobacco, and other non-combustible nicotine products.

The Philippines is a large, young market where smoking rates remain high and smoke-free alternatives are still early in adoption. JTI's continued investment in Nordic Spirit — adding flavors, expanding retail channels — signals confidence that pouches can grow alongside heated tobacco and vapes.

The competitive picture in Asia

JTI isn't alone in pushing pouches into the region. Philip Morris International launched ZYN Strong in Japan earlier in August 2026, with four flavors targeting the Tokyo market. Both moves point to the same trend: tobacco multinationals see Southeast and East Asia as the next frontier for nicotine-pouch growth, beyond their saturated Nordic home market and the increasingly competitive US.

The difference is positioning. PMI leads with ZYN — the category's biggest brand globally. JTI competes with Nordic Spirit, which doesn't have ZYN's scale but has been building distribution in markets where ZYN is absent or less established. The Philippines is one of those: a market where Nordic Spirit got in first in 2023, and where JTI is now layering in flavor innovation to defend that early-mover advantage.

What's next

The flavor expansion is a portfolio-management move, not a new format launch. But it matters because it shows where pouch competition is heading in emerging markets: brands win not just by arriving first, but by continuously refreshing the lineup and making the product available wherever consumers already shop — including food-delivery apps.

For the Philippines specifically, the next regulatory milestones will matter more than flavor count. The brand registry is in place; the question is whether the government follows with age-of-sale rules, nicotine caps, or flavor restrictions — the same regulatory arc that Europe and North America have already traveled.
