The daily pulse of the nicotine pouch market

PMI's US ZYN sales jumped 23% last quarter — here's what's actually driving it

Philip Morris International's Q3 2026 results show US ZYN segment revenue up 22.7% and shipments up 4.2% to 3.2 billion pouches, with Nielsen category share gaining over 100 basis points since June. PMI says it's about to spend even more to keep the growth going.

PouchDaily Desk·

Philip Morris International's nicotine pouch business had a genuinely strong third quarter, and the company's own numbers back it up this time.

In the results it filed with the SEC on October 21, PMI reported that its U.S. segment — which is almost entirely ZYN — grew net revenue by 22.7% and gross profit by 24.2% in the third quarter of 2026. ZYN shipments in the US rose 4.2% to 3.2 billion pouches, even against what PMI called a tough comparison: last year's quarter included a one-off promotional campaign that gave ZYN an artificial sales bump.

What happened

The growth wasn't just about moving more pouches. PMI said ZYN's U.S. category share, as tracked by Nielsen, increased by more than 100 basis points between June and September — a meaningful gain in a market where Velo Plus and On! Plus have been eating into ZYN's lead for most of 2026. PMI credited the rebound to the rollout of ZYN ULTRA (its higher-nicotine moist line) and new flagship dry flavors, including the 1.5mg and 8mg strengths it added earlier this year.

Globally, PMI's broader oral smoke-free category — which includes ZYN alongside legacy Nordic snus — turned volume-positive for the first time in a while: modern oral products (ZYN and similar) grew 20.6% to 0.5 billion pouches, enough to offset the ongoing decline in traditional snus. ZYN is now sold in 62 international markets, with PMI flagging growth in Global Travel Retail, Poland, the Philippines, and what it described as "sequential improvements" in Sweden — ZYN's home turf, where it has struggled against entrenched snus brands.

On the regulatory side, PMI noted that ZYN now has FDA marketing authorization (PMTA) for 31 variants total, after the 11 ZYN ULTRA variants cleared in August, which the company says is more than any other nicotine pouch brand.

Why it matters

PMI doesn't break out ZYN as its own line item in every filing, so quarters like this are one of the few windows into how the biggest brand in the category is actually performing, not just how its parent company is doing overall. A 100-point-plus share gain in three months is a real swing in a crowded market, and it comes right as PMI is preparing to spend more, not less, to defend it.

The company said it plans to increase investment behind ZYN again in the fourth quarter — an expanded "When It Clicks" ad campaign and continued transitional support as flagship ZYN cans move from 15 to 20 pouches (a change PouchDaily covered when PMI first announced it in September). That combination of rising sales and rising spend suggests PMI sees the current fight for shelf space and category share as worth paying for, rather than a problem solved.

What's next

PMI's 10-Q filing for the quarter is due to follow in the coming days with more granular detail. The real test is whether the Q3 share gains hold once the can-size transition and pricing changes land in Q4 — a shift that comes with its own retailer logistics and could affect how shoppers perceive ZYN's value against competitors who haven't made the same move.
