Velo is about to be in every major Japanese convenience store
BAT Japan will stock three Velo Medium products in all Ministop stores from October 5, completing nationwide coverage across 7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart and NewDays.
BAT Japan announced that Velo will be stocked in every Ministop convenience store nationwide from October 5 — the last of Japan's big convenience chains to carry the brand, meaning Velo is now on shelves at all of the country's major c-store retailers.
What happened
Per BAT Japan's own release, three "Medium" strength products will be sold at Ministop stores nationwide at a fixed price of 360 yen (tax included): Velo Spiffy Spearmint, Velo Icy Berries and Velo Groovy Grape. The company positions these as entry points for people trying the product for the first time.
Ministop was the gap. Velo is already carried by 7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart, Seicomart and JR East's NewDays kiosks, alongside tobacco shops, BAT's glo Store in Ginza and the official Velo online shop. From October 5, Velo will be reachable through every major convenience chain in Japan.
The brand first launched in Japan in February 2020 in Fukuoka prefecture, and has since widened its distribution steadily. One detail worth knowing: in Japan, Velo is sold as smokeless oral tobacco (a Swedish-style white snus), not the tobacco-free nicotine pouches sold in the US and Europe — Japanese regulation treats it differently.
Why it matters for pouch users
Convenience-store saturation is how modern oral products go mainstream in any market — it's the playbook that made ZYN a household name in the US after it hit c-store shelves. Velo reaching every major Japanese c-store chain signals BAT expects the Japanese market to keep growing, and gives it retail presence in a market where PMI is pushing ZYN's Strong Series hard.
BAT's global numbers back the bet: the company says its smokeless brands now serve over 35 million adults (as of end of June 2026), and its Capital Markets Day plan targets more than 50% of group revenue from smokeless by 2035. Japan is one of the few big markets where both BAT and PMI are scaling modern oral products side by side.
